“Obedient in Gethsemane” – a new publication

Matthew’s portrayal of Jesus’ obedience amidst the various conflicting notions of obedience in the Gospel. Using narrative criticism, Matthew’s Gethsemane text is analysed, whereby Jesus is shown to be authentically submissive to God’s will. Intratextual links between Gethsemane and the rest of the Gospel reveal that Gethsemane epitomises the entire Gospel and, therefore, is representative of Matthean obedience theology. Intertextual associations with the Old Testament demonstrate that Jesus’ obedience even advances that of all genuinely obedient people of God and, hence, is put forth to every disciple as universally representative and the perfect example to be emulated.
