Abstract
Modern translations of the New Testament both in Slovak and in Czech use a well-known adjective “merciful”. In seven cases – Matt 5:7; Luke 6:36.36; Eph 4:32; 1 Pet 3:8; Heb 2:17; Jas 5:11 –, however, in Greek original the authors use four different words. The present study points to the influence of misericors from the Vulgate on this translation and at the same time proposes translations that reflects the Greek text.
On the Meaning of εἰς παρεμβολàς αὐτοῦ in Jdt 16:2b

Abstract
The present paper aims to offer a new explanation of the lectio difficilior εἰς παρεμβολàς αὐτοῦ in Jdt 16:2b that challenges the existing ones. It both proposes and argues for εἰς as a preposition having the sense of reason, i.e. bearing a merged meaning of purpose and cause, not that of direction. It is also argued that the expression παρεμβολàς αὐτοῦ refers to the precincts of the Temple of God, which in the narrative are the focus of the enemy’s destructive effort. Judith’s words “because of his tents in the midst of his people he has saved me” (Jdt 16:2b) are then a statement that God was motivated to act on behalf of Judith by necessity to preserve his Temple precincts intact. In this way the Lord displays his sovereignty and saves his people (cf. 8:21-22).
The Book of Sirach Full of Inspiration

Abstract
With this paper, we would like to enter the discussion of inspiration of the Sacred Scripture as it was perceived by the identifiable authors of the holy books. The implementation of the Book of Sirach into The Inspiration and Truth of Sacred Scripture was a significant and beneficial step because of its content, despite the fact that neither Jews nor Protestants consider it inspired. Yet, it is an important witness of formation of the canon by both Jews and Christians. This paper comments on paragraphs twenty and eighty dedicated to the Book of Sirach and proposes additional possible aspects from the book that support the idea of inspiration of the Scripture and of its reader. While The Inspiration and Truth of Sacred Scripture highlights the inspiration in the Book of Sirach based on Sirach’s personal study of the Scriptures and of the noteworthy personalities of national history, it also features his acquisition of experiences from elders and from travels abroad. Sirach was not only a scribe and teacher. He also paid attention in preparing his students for life; he prepared them not
only at an intellectual and religious level but also at the practical one.
Paul of Tarsus and the Mother Church of Jerusalem

Abstract
The title of this contribution is developed in the present study. It deals with the relationship between Paul, the apostle of the Gentiles and the Mother church of Jerusalem. The first part of this intervention deals with the “growth” of the early community in Jerusalem and its
impact on the rest of the other Christian communities in the first cent. AD. The second part outlines the figure of Paul before his “apostolic calling”, then his mission “among the nations”. Finally, Paul’s double movement is presented with regard to the “Mother church of Jerusalem”: the staggering force that drew him to her and the centrifugal force that moved him away from her. Exegetes often “dramatize” these relations between Paul and the “Mother church of Jerusalem,” but it could only be a “ongoing dialogue” in which various people of early Christianity sought a clear solution in order to co-exist peacefully.
Translation Technique from Biblical Greek (4): Analysis of the New Slovak Translation of Psalms 50(51)–74(75) according to the Septuagint

Abstract
The article contains a though analysis of the translation technique used in the Slovak
translation of Psalms 50(51)–74(75) according to the Septuagint. It points out its many
shortcomings which must be cleared up in the future. Concordance in lexis is not always observed. Cases of semantically incorrect translation occur. Neither in grammar is a stable equivalence preserved. It is often caused by a grammatically incorrect interpretation and/or ignorance of expressive potential of the receiving language. Parallel publication of translations of the Greek and Hebrew text loses its point, because both the agreement and differences between them are obliterated. In parallel identical places synonyms appear. Elsewhere the Greek text is adapted to resemble its Hebrew parallel.
