Abstract: This article focuses on the well-researched theme of women in Luke’s Gospel, advancing the following thesis: Elizabeth as the first woman on stage prefigures the stories of several other women who make their appearance in the course of narrated action. In addition to other motives, the annunciation of John’s birth (1,5-25) revolves around the theme of a transformation of the mother-to-be – Elizabeth, a barren woman, conceives a son through God’s intervention. The theme of God’s intervention on behalf of a woman reappears in the gospel, exemplified as it is in Jesus’ actions for the benefit of sick and sinful women. Those women, along with Elizabeth, form a narrative chain that appears to be one of the hallmarks of the Third Gospel.
