Abstract: Psalm 8 would not at all be in praise of God on the basis of the greatness of man to whom royal power over creation has been granted. Rather, the psalmist is meditating on the complex relationship between God, man and creation, and this meditation is made on the basis of the text of Genesis 1–2. God wished to bestow on man power over all his possessions (Psalm 8,7–9) but on thinking it over he wanted to be sure that man would not want to take his place.
