online:<\/strong> 2017-12-01<br \/><strong>Published in print:<\/strong> 2017-12-30<\/p><p><strong>Abstract:<\/strong> The present paper aims to offer a new explanation of the lectio difficilior \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2 \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b5\u03bc\u03b2\u03bf\u03bb\u00e0\u03c2 \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 in Jdt 16:2b that challenges the existing ones. It both proposes and argues for \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2 as a preposition having the sense of reason, i.e. bearing a merged meaning of purpose and cause, not that of direction. It is also argued that the expression \u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b5\u03bc\u03b2\u03bf\u03bb\u00e0\u03c2 \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 refers to the precincts of the Temple of God, which in the narrative are the focus of the enemy\u2019s destructive effort. Judith\u2019s words \u201cbecause of his tents in the midst of his people he has saved me\u201d (Jdt 16:2b) are then a statement that God was motivated to act on behalf of Judith by necessity to preserve his Temple precincts intact.
