online:<\/strong> 2015-12-01<br \/><strong>Published in print:<\/strong> 2015-12-30<\/p><p><strong>Abstract:<\/strong> This article focuses on the well-researched theme of women in Luke\u2019s Gospel, advancing the following thesis: Elizabeth as the first woman on stage prefigures the stories of several other women who make their appearance in the course of narrated action. In addition to other motives, the annunciation of John\u2019s birth (1,5-25) revolves around the theme of a transformation of the mother-to-be \u2013 Elizabeth, a barren woman, conceives a son through God\u2019s intervention. The theme of God\u2019s intervention on behalf of a woman reappears in the gospel, exemplified as it is in Jesus\u2019 actions for the benefit of sick and sinful women.
