<\/strong>2025-12-30<\/p><p><strong>Abstract:<\/strong> This study identifies a single coherent theological motif in the Deuteronomistic historical literature: the theme of idolatry leading to destruction. It examines selected words and phrases related to the sin of idolatry and its subsequent punishment in their immediate contexts, in order to discern how these elements interlink throughout the Deuteronomistic corpus. First, it investigates the description of the crucial transgression denoted by the verb pair \u201cto serve\u201d ( \u05d3\u05d1\u05e2 ( and \u201cto worship\u201d ( \u05d4\u05d5\u05d7 hishtafel) other gods. Next, it analyses the expression \u201cto mislead into sin\u201d ( \u05d0\u05d8\u05d7 hiphil) in the Books of Kings, a phrase that describes the effects of sinful behaviour on the people and underscores the irreversibility of the transgression. Finally, the discussion focuses on the rhetoric of Moses\u2019 and Joshua\u2019s warnings of \u201cdestruction\u201d ( \u05d3\u05d1\u05d0 ( \u2014 the inevitable consequence of idolatry \u2014 which was ultimately fulfilled during the Babylonian king\u2019s invasion.
