Joshua in the Book of Exodus

The subject of the monograph Joshua in the Book of Exodus is the four texts from the Book of Exodus in which Joshua appears. In the first of these (Exod 17:8-16), Joshua wrestles with the Amalekites before arriving at the mountain of God in the wilderness of Sinai. In the second text (24:12-18) he ascends God's mountain with Moses, the third pericope describes the descent of both from the mountain (32:15-19), and in the last text Joshua remains permanently in the tent of meeting (33:7-11). This is an exegetical literary-critical study of each of the four texts. However, since this is a textual-literary exploration of a single theme across the entire book, the individual pericopes are analyzed purposively primarily for the sake of clarifying the meaning of Joshua in the episodes. Thus, exclusive attention is given to Joshua and his role in the given pericopes of the Book of Exodus.
